Mr. Pratap Narain belongs to first batch of Indian Statistical Service (ISS).He is an international statistical consultant and works for the promotion of economic statistics.
As an expert in the field of national accounts statistics has a vast national and international experience in the organization of national statistical systems. He has worked and made contributions in the field of national accounts, agriculture and environmental statistics. The fields of his work include: agriculture, livestock, fisheries, women status, environment, and forestry.
As an economic statistician he has worldwide work experience (FAO member countries). He has undertaken advisory and training missions, delivered lectures, participated, chaired international statistical meetings and seminars in countries of Africa, America, Asia and Europe.
He has published 50 research papers on national accounts and related matters. He has prepared a book entitled “A System of Economic Accounts for Food and Agriculture”which was published by FAO in four languages: Chinese, English, French and Spanish. It has been quoted as a landmark in the field of agricultural statistics. The FAO also released two handbooks drafted by Pratap Narain to facilitate compilation of economic accounts and agri-environmental indicators.
He has served for 20 years in the National Accounts Division, CSO, India. He has also worked as Director (Monitoring and Evaluation) North Eastern Council, Director Agriculture Statistics and Crop Insurance & Additional Commissioner Land Records, Government of Utter Pradesh and has retired as Senior Statistician at FAO (Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations) Statistics Division, Rome in 2003. He has also been consultant for other countries. He has been in Advisory Committee of National Accounts, set up by Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, Government of India for a long period.
